Perempuan Macam Dia (The Women Like Her)

Zariq Rosita-Hanif is an autodidact artist-illustrator, a novice player of the Sampe’ (a Bornean boat lute) and an aspiring children’s author. Her art revolves around heritage and history, interweaving Malaysian and British cultural narratives and folklore with contemporary societal issues relating to forced migration and discrimination.

In her new body of work, 'Perempuan Macam Dia (The Women Like Her)', Zariq explores story-telling techniques through paper-cut puppetry and stop-motion animation to highlight the untold stories of transgender asylum seekers and refugees.

Perempuan Macam Dia (The Women Like Her)

Written in Malay and translated into English by Zariq Rosita-Hanif

Perempuan macam dia,

Serupa macam harimau,

Dikagumi tapi ditakuti.

Perempuan macam dia,

Serupa macam harimau,

Tiada ruang dan terbuang.

Perempuan macam dia,

Serupa macam harimau,

Lambang keberanian hanyalah suatu jenaka.

---

The women like her,

Are like tigers,

Admired but feared.

The women like her,

Are like tigers,

No space and displaced.

The women like her,

Are like tigers,

A heraldry of bravery is simply an irony.
